A SOLAR-POWERED BENCH THAT SPINS EVER SO SLOWLY

Interactive public art installation

The Solar-Powered Bench revolves using sunlight; giving users a new perspective on their urban context through slow rotation. This whimsical motion offers visitors a playful opportunity to change their perspective on public space through the gradual rotation.

Accessible for all ages to come together and while away time, looking afresh at their local vista while chatting and communing with the natural environment.

Shaped like a 60s flower graphic, the aerial view is reminiscent of a plot of flowers oscillating and spinning in the sunshine. In addition, 60s furniture aesthetics are referenced, (a time when new synthetics were revolutionising manufacturing techniques). This retro look and feel is combined with contemporary sustainability values – harvesting sunlight through embedded solar panels.

The artwork interacts with the sun, spinning faster on brighter days and slower under cloud cover. Sweet moments are experienced by smaller people as feet hang off the ground in a childlike way, while taller users need to playfully ‘re-plant’ their feet every couple of metres as the bench slowly spins.
