For this temporary art installation, we transformed an old school bus to take participants on a trippy journey to stillness. From the outside, The Midnight Special looks like a standard, retro Australian school bus but step inside and you find yourself in a futuristic, gravitational vortex of choreographed light and sound – an LED lightshow whereby colour shatters in hypnotising patterns across viewers on the bus floor, creating a meditative ambience.

The light vortex sporadically slows then quickens in pace, creating optical illusions for viewers who see only the elusive, floating light formations rather than the boundaries of the venue.

The installation is an array of addressable LEDs – each meticulously mapped with specific content in collaboration with Hyper Reelist (Jobe Williams), then synchronised to respond to a soundtrack composed by Mark Williams.

The Midnight Special, commissioned for Strawberry Fields Festival, is a psychedelic mash-up of nostalgia and the unexpected.
