MÖBIUS

Public art activation
Melbourne, London

MÖBIUS is a collaborative, stop-motion sculpture that can be reconfigured into multiple patterns.

Over a two-week period, passers-by at Federation Square in Melbourne, assisted us to move all of the sculpture’s 21 triangles for each stop-motion frame. The final animation is made from 25,000 ‘moves’. In this way, it is the animation rather than the sculpture itself that is the final artwork.

And so, our animation is egalitarian at its heart – in bringing people together to work towards a final outcome. It was also educational: teaching participants about the fundamentals of stop-motion technique.

The London Olympic cultural programming team loved MÖBIUS as an expression of community working together to create art. To this end, the MÖBIUS animation was displayed all over London on digital screens as part of the London Olympic Games cultural program.
